just got an old motorcycle that was abandoned at a storage facility. was able to get the tank open and looked inside and saw a fair amount of surface rust, not bad, but looks like it needs to be cleaned out. does anybody know of the best way to clean out the inside of a tank?

KBS Coatings makes a product call Gold Standard Tank Sealer. They have a three step system that will clean, etch, and seal the tank. You want to seal it because the rust will come back. I called and talked to the guys and they were very helpful. I am not mechanic but I was able to follow their instructions.

Just buy a do-it-yourself KBS Cycle Tank Repair Kit. Contains all the KBS products you need to clean, etch and seal up to a 6 gallon tank. Just follow the easy directions. They have on-line tech support too.

they make a product called Creem coat, but is a 3 step process. Kinda a pain to do, and ya gotta remove the tank to do it. First, you clear it as best as possible, then:

step 1 - dump in acid cleaner - let it soak and slosh it around (be careful - it will eat the paint off the outside too)

step 2 - neutralizer to kill the acid

step 3 - coat it with the creem stuff - takes several coats, and several days to dry

Good luck! Kinda difficult to do, but have had pretty good success with it.

KBS stands for Klean, blast and seal. What size tank? Need about 2 oz. of sealer for every gallon of tank. I used the Cycle tank kit and got great results.
