just got an old motorcycle that was abandoned in a storage facility. besides being really dirty it naturally didn't come with the key. how do i go about getting a new key? do i have to take out the ignition and then go to a dealership? any help appreciated.

You may end up having to replace the ignition switch (and gas tank lock, if applicable). The below website claims to have the ability to create motorcycle keys by the number code on them... you might give it a shot. They seem kind of pricey, so I'd check them out well first. Good luck!

By the way... what about the title? Are you going to be able to register the bike without it???

Depends on the make of the bike.
I have a Old Honda SS125A, and i got a replacement key by quoting the number off the barrel to my local bike shop that has a key cutting service. This cost me £4 per key.
ON some locks the number is ont the front, on others on the base .

You can bring the VIN# to the dealership and they might be able to cut a key from that. But most keys have a seperate key code that you probably don't have. If they can't cut a new key from the VIN, you will have to replace the ignition switch which comes with new keys.

Helps to know what kind of motorcycle.
I needed a key for my '80 Honda CB750K.
Called the second closest Dealer ('cause I don't like the closest) and he said "If you can give me the number on the switch, I can make you a key." I brought him the switch because it was not hard to take out, and he made me a key in less than 15 minutes. And at $3.50 apiece, I got a spare too.
