Technically it was "the British" who burned it down. But I like to think Canadians did it too.

Check out the wikipedia site (below). There is a black and white illustration of the 19th Century view of the white house. It was similar in style, but more stories. I think it wasn't quite so elegant as the present day building.

By the way, the British burned it in retaliation for the burning of Canada's parliament in Toronto (which was York in those days).

Ummm it wasn't Canada who burned down the white house but the British that occupied the territory now known as Canada. I am pretty sure that it was the same design but not for sure, never really thought about that.

technically it was the british who burned the whitehouse down, but the british army in the war of 1812 also included canadian soldier though they fought under the british flag, so the canadians should still have credit for burning it down. it's one of the things that we canadians are so proud of.

oh and as for the answer to the question, just go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_House and compare the pictures

Canadians didn't do it, it was English soldiers from England. Canada was (and is) England's *****.
