I have made major changes to my diet. How long does it take to see a significant decrease? Say from 240, down to 200 or less.

Give it three months on a low-saturated-fat, low cholesterol diet. This should help, but some people cannot get their cholesterol low enough even on a strict diet and with exercise. In that case, you will have to add a statin drug to your regime. Y\In any case, you will want to keep some level of mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats in your diet to keep HDL levels from dropping too much. You really should consult a nutritionist for the best approach for your condition.

You need to exercise also, walking is the best for you and you will see an improvement within 2-4 weeks. As you probably
know that it is only a small portion from the diet that causes high cholesterol, as we are producing it in our bodies and a lot is hereditary. Therefore walking is an excellent exercise and try a bit of resistance too, like dumbells.

I went from 268 to 169 in three months, no drugs. My diet was no fats except for healthy fats like fish and nuts. That means no red meat, nothing fried, only grilled or steamed (or raw like sushi). I also had half a red grapefruit every day because I read somewhere that's good for lowering cholesterol. I was very careful about reading labels on food to make sure there was no fat, especially trans fat. I was very strict about all this, and it really worked. My doctor was amazed. You can do it!!!
I also lost about ten pounds.

Most Dr.s give it about 3 mo. but if it runs in your family, you may need medication to bring it down. Rely on your Dr. for this info as he is the one who knows your medical history the best.
