When someone tries to get you to hate her, turn it around on them. Ask them WHY you should hate her if they say it bluntly. If they don't...the BEST you can do is nod and let what they say go in one ear and out the other. Just don't say anything negative about her BACK to them, and when they walk away...forget you ever heard what they said. You don't want to feed the fire by spreading that gossip. When they figure out that you aren't going to be the one to spread the hate, they'll quit coming to you over it.

You can't keep (i.e. own) someone. Perhaps you have a dependent personality and didn't quite get the mother's love you wanted? The cure for dependency is to act independently, to break free live on your own for a while. Let her go.
