What is the solution to x-(5-3x)=7x+4? I can't remember how to distribute the first "x" variable. Please help! I'm trying to help my sister with her homework and I've forgotten how to do this problem.

think of it as

x + (-1)(5-3x) = 7x + 4

and then expand
- this would just be the simplified quick rule to remeber and repeat when doing questions like this

to explain x-(5-3x)=7x+4
are purpose dealing with this equation will only be to simplify it
we can't do anything else with it
if you know you have to do the brackets you have to know this to get rid of them

this bracket is doing
5-3x
what will be done with the value of 5-3x

the value of this (5-3x) will be subtracted from x
x-(5-3x)

to go further with equation in simplifing it we will need to split the
two parts of the bracket into there own value

together when calculated in the brackets they will become the sum of two numbers that will then be subtracted from x

since it is x -(5-3x)

split the sum into the two numbers there and remeber together the whole value would have been subtracted so just subtract both the values on there own

it would look like this

x - (+5) - (-3x) = 7x+4
so you could simpllify further to
x-5+3x=7x+4

Are you sure that there's a negative sign between the x and the parentheses? I would be able to work it if it were just, "x(5-3X)=7x+4

Are you an adult? If you are, then well you seriously need to go over your maths. My little daughter who is 9 years old solved this problem easily. Don't worry, some good math sites would be algebra help.com or web math.com. we all forget once in a while. by the way, the answer is -3 :)

The left side is equal to x - 5 + 3x, or simply 4x - 5

you have to always expand first

x-(5-3x)=7x+4
x-5+3x=7x+4
4x-5=7x+4
-9=3x
-3=x
