What might be some affordable ways to give the plants light and add moisture to the air? I don't have alot of windows for natural light.

Ferns - but they need misting. Mother-in-Laws' tongue (Snake plant) - also called 'cast iron plant'! It is really an aspidistra. You can't kill the things!

Philodendrons are generally tough, rugged plants that can tolerate lower light, little or no fertilizer, and still do well.
