You will require an Internet Service Provider to get connected to the Internet.
May be a Dial Up Connection which you can dial using your phone line, or a high speed or DSL connection.
You may use Yahoo! AT&T service as your Service Provider. LInk: http://promo.yahoo.com/att/
Once you get connected to the internet you can check your e-mails from yahoo! (Or any other e-mail service.)

you need a modem and a ISP the modem needs to be "bound" to your account do that through the ISP.
