Shouldn't we focus our intelligence on detering crime instead of fighting it?Let's start with the kids ,give them something to do keep them busy enjoying life and freedom, let them mature with a sense of self. That is just an example, but let's do something to get the ball rolling.

I know from personal experience that prisons are not always the answer. Rehabilition is another route. I understand what you mean when you say "give the kids something to do". That does not always work. I had things to do as a child and as a teen. I just didn't do it. Instead broke laws, was permiscuous and just rebelious. I did not learn a thing in jail, except maybe how to commit more crime. I think that when a child is young and shows signs of distrubing behavior, there should be a faith based environment and medical help as an intervention. People who commits crimes are usually kids that grew up to be miss guided and undiagnosed adults. I did not know that about myself until I finally grew up, got sober and said to my self, "This life is not for me". I now know that I suffer from bipolar depression, a manic state of feelings. I think that if my parents and sibling had pushed the schools and the counslers, I might not have commited any crime, nor would I have become an alcoholic. Prison is not always the answer. Alot of the times, well, it is. But from where I stand, you usually just get out with more tricks and alot more clever, that is until you get caught again. Then the ball will keep on rolling.

Prisons are the worst ideas for deterring crime. Why not try banishment? Send criminals to other countries or work farms. What ever happened to work farms? Why aren't all prisoners forced to work 8 hours a day at a job, whether it's washing dishes or building computers? Prison-Industry should be one word. Everyone should be put to work. After their 8 hours they can choose to go to school to advance to another prison-industry if they so desire. The amount of time working is paid back to the state and victims for their crimes. And their punishment is directly related to how much work they have to do before they can get out. Tell me the holes in this idea?

Education is the key.But some kids grow up to be *ssholes,no matter how well you treat them.
Even with our societal way of living, some people just don't fit.We all shouldn't have to pay the price for a few bad apples. My tax dollars go to clothe, feed, and shelter people who would harm the rest of us.I don't like this idea.
While I believe that most can be rehabilitated, there are some who just need to DIE! Murderers, rapists, child molesters. They shouldn't be accomodated at the expense of the rest of us.
I think jail/prison should be reserved for those who can be corrected.
Educate our children, and you will see less of these things.

Maybe a more severe deterrent would be better than prison for convicted felons of horrible crimes. No, not the death penalty. That's too good for most pieces of filth. I suggest hard labor. Put the criminals to work in the freezing cold of Northern Alaska and pay them nothing for it. That might lower our gas and oil prices too!

no not all crimes are bad enough for prison but we should be enforcing the laws on the books already & make "prison" prison.
they did somthing against society and should not have the rights & privlages that are allowd now.
as fare as reabilitating it's not just kids it's every body, the town the city, the state and to do that you need to remove coruption. and get back to basics so the money goes where it needs to.

i agree that preventing crime needs to start at a young age.

but we also need role models that teach kids that it is cool to be smart.

most of the role models today teach that it is cool to be a criminal or a racist....or a slut....(sorry female tennybopper pop queens but this means you)

we need role models that are well spoken and educated to change the opinion or american youth..

and for the people that are just intent on being criminals...open the Rock back up chum the water between the island and the mainland,,,shoot anyone that manages to swim ashore and toss em all in and let them fend for themselves for 20 years.
no guards, no food drops, if they want to act like animals let them live like animals for a few, maybe after that they will respect civilization.

No, prison isn't always the answer. Every case is unique, it depends on the person and the crime.

For example, throwing a druggie in jail every time he robs a store for drug money isn't going to help. You have to break the cycle of robbing a store, buying drugs, going to jail, and getting out. Drug rehab would be a much better solution.

The Death Penalty should be institued more often and more effectively. that in and of it's self would deter crime.

no way, but this is a society of justice so prisons are here to stay. I think we need more mental institutions..
