Do you mean a "euphemism" - a nicer way of saying something mean?

Like instead of saying someone's stupid, you say that the wheel is turning, but the hamster is dead.

We could say that the lesser word is 'an understatement', or we could say that it is 'toned down' or 'softer' , it is usually 'more polite'
