I think it depends upon why he was using the prostitute. He may not be using her just for lust, perhaps he needed to be held and accepted and not bullied and criticised, perhaps he felt like he just needed to be in charge for a few minutes. In that case I hope the wife questions the way she has been treating her husband. If he's using a prostitute just for a shag in a sexless marriage then I hope it gets her to thinking about the validity of the relationship and why she's bothering with it. If he's just a shagaround and it diminishes her self esteem then I hope she questions the need to derive her self esteem from having sex with her husband. I hope she also takes a look at his self esteem. He may be needing some sexual acceptance in order to feel good about himself and his own low self esteem is what made him vulnerable to being exploited by the prostitute in the first place.

This is bigger then self-esteem the fact is the whole relationship in one form or another is suffering from communication problems not just with each other, but also with each individuals own self. Both most be living a relationship based soling on predetermine roles so that when the relationship went thru its usual turbulence neither individual knew their real place with each other because they had no idea within themselves how they wanted to be. He most of felt neglected yet instead of turning to his friend the wife he felt it better to run to a stranger. The poor wife most feel lost all the way thru the whole relationship because this usually never comes as a surprise to them. The fact is this happens because too individual based their relationship on the intimacy, instead of the friendship. So the mans use to sleeping with strangers anyways since he never really close to his wife, and the wife's use to dealing with a strange husband whose behavior is never a suprise. Which is sad because that is the predetermined role... society at its finest... so maybe she just feels strangely unfulfilled? and never knows why?

Whether the man is paying for it or not the affect on the spouse is damaging...is a mistress an unpaid prostitute? Loss of trust is the ultimate price thats paid.

I would be more worried about the STDs. And the annihaltion of trust. Yes, self-esteem would be effected, but hopefully the woman would be strong enough to let him know if this happened again, that would be the end - and really follow through if he crossed that line again!

Well, surely it's going to hurt the marriage. No woman likes to be screwed around on, let alone with a $2 whore. Talk about the ultimate insult. I'd kill my husband, literally.

A man cheating on his wife can ruin the marriage. Even if she forgives him she never forgets.
