Okay, my g/f just got internet with a cable modem. Her roommate is connected with automatic DHCP, but my g/f's computer won't connect to the modem, either directly or through a router. I connected to my Mac to troubleshoot, and it said that it couldn't connect due to a self assigned IP address. I have tried looking at the settings that the computer that connects, and couldn't find anything different, but i could be missing something because I am a Mac guy and used to things being a lot simpler.

You have to set up the networking for that computer. There is a setup wizard for that.
Once that is done, hook it up to the router and boot it. That should do it.
Via DHCP the router will assign an IP address to every computer and VoIP phone connected.
