Melons, and tomatoes often will split when they soak up water too quickly. This often happens after a sudden heavy rain, after a dry spell for instance.
You have two solutions.... good drainage, and good watering....
Providing adequate drainage for excess rain, for example, will keep the plant from soaking up too much water too fast. Watering the plant on a regular basis, will help it to continue to grow, even if the weather turns dry. We water our plants twice a day, morning and evening, and each planting has a gravel drain bed under it, to help carry off excess moisture. Dont forget to 'turn' your melons too... you need to rotate them, every other day or so, so that they will grow evenly, and the color will be more uniform.
Have Fun!

Too much water makes them split. Try putting a rock or brick under the melon when it is developing so that it won't be sitting in the moisture. I have seen this work.

It's caused by irratic watering. If the plant gets little water then all of a sudden gets a lot of water the quick rush of water inside the plant will cause pressure to build up inside it and split the mellon. The mellon needs consistent watering. So if you hit a dry spell, start watering your mellon otherwise the next time you get a big rain it will split.
