First, turn off the water at the water heater if it's the hot valve leaking or where it comes into the house for cold or both. Use a small screwdriver and pry off the H/C insert in the faucet handle. Next, use a screwdriver to remove the screw that holds the handle onto the stem. Loosen the packing nut with a wrench and remove it. Pull the valve stem out of the wall and replace the washer at the end of the stem. Re-install in reverse order.

There are too many different types of shower faucets and possible problems to cover here. www.howstuffworks.com will probably help. Another good way to start is to go to the manufacturer's web site and see if they have the repair procedures. There are literally dozens and dozens of different faucets. It isn't too hard to learn the process. The worst part for you will be knowing when to use more force and when not to. Some serious damage can be done of you use too much force on the wrong thing. The bad part is that some things take quite a lot of force.

You can fix the problem. But you will need a special tool for your shower. I fixed mine a couple of years ago and went to a local hardware store, not a Lowes, Home Depot, etc. Those store won't have the tool. You remove the hot and cold handle (whichever is leaking) and use the tool to remove the washer inside. Replace it with a new one and it should work.

You need to replace the stems. To remove them you need a special tool which can be purchased at the home improvement store for about $5. When you remove them, bring them down to the home improvement store so you can match them up to replace them. There are lots and lots of different stems, so make sure you have it with you to match it up correctly.
