when x=0, it cuts the y-axis at (0,b)
when y=0, it cuts the x-axis at (-b/m,0)
the gradient of (-2,4) and (0,2) is 4-2/-2 = -1
so the equation of the line joining them is y-4 = -1(x+2)
y-4 = -x - 2
x + y = 2
Now (3, a-1) lies on this line, so substitute the points:
3 + a - 1 = 2
a = 0
