Why are 'buildings' called so when they are already built?

Not a riddle or anything..just curious to know.

I dont know there could be a lot of things they are called.

How about "structures"

because people got used to calling them buildings WHILE they were being built and couldn't grasp the concept of calling them "builts" after the building was completed?

Same reason paintings are called so when they are already painted.
