If it contains estrogen, then I would NOT take it! Does your OB know you are breastfeeding? It's recommended that any estrogen-containing contraceptive be AVOIDED until baby is AT LEAST six months old AND after baby is well-established on solid foods. You REALLY should be on a progestin only pill if you choose to use hormonal birth control.
Examples of progestin-only birth control methods:
the progestin-only pill (POP) also called the "mini-pill" (Micronor, Errin, Nor-QD, Ovrette, Microval, etc)
the birth control injection (Depo Provera)
the progesterone-releasing IUD (Mirena, Progestasert)
the birth control implant (Norplant, Implanon).
For MOST mothers, progestin-only forms of contraception do not cause problems with milk supply *IF* started after the 6th-8th week postpartum and if given at normal doses. (Although there are some women who have reported supply problems.)

Ortho is NOT okay for breastfeeding moms...it is VERY likely to affect your supply. PLEASE don't take it...Your doctor never should have prescribed it - a Progesterone only pill is much better if you are nursing. If you a worried about the effectiveness, than you can use something extra like spermicide as a double protection, but don't take the ortho. It's no good if you are breastfeeding.

I'm breastfeeding and using the mini pill. I don't think you should be using Ortho. Tell your ob that you're breastfeeding and he/she will give you the mini pill which is perfectly safe whilst breastfeeding

I took it when I was breastfeeding my son and never had any problems. I nursed him till he was 18 months old. Especially since you have a good milk supply already, I would definitely try it. If you notice your milk supply going down too much, you can always try something different.

If I were you I would try to find a non-hormonal method of birth control but if this just isn't an option opt for a progesterone only pill for the well-being of your baby.

Why don't you just use another form of contracption whilst you are breast feeding, if you are concerned. Even if you took a progesterone only pill, it is still advised to use another form of contraception. I also believe the mini-pill can cause problems, if you already have a hormonal imbalance. HTH.

I am not exactly sure what it is called, but you should def. not be taking ortho.. it might be that progestrin only pill, but I do know that with this other pill you have to be extremely careful and take exactly the same time everyday. Talk to your O.B. about it.

I did not use any oral contraception while I was breastfeeding. My doctor did not believe in it and felt it could harm the baby.
