apartheid was the segregation of caucasians from the other inhabitants of the country of South Africa.
although some of the white hard liners would have like to have carried out a holocaust of sorts it wasn't one.

If one has to look deep down and lived through apartheid (which in reality existed since 1652) you would be inclined to say that this was mightier and more heinous than the holocaust.

South African White Minority Rule - 1948 up to April 1994.
The minority whites governed the country "illegitimately".
Non whites did not have franchise and hence became "Third Class" citizens.
White domination of power in every facet of life was entrenched,
and OPPRESION of the black majority was the Rule of Law.

Racial Segregation laws were enacted by the government and
enforced by the police, military and judiciary.
............................ ad.inifitum .............
In a nutshell :-
It was the "Perfection" of racism ,by the Afrikaner White ( that was started by the Colonial British)
It was a system of Government in South Africa whereby the non white people could be murdered, oppressed, disgraced and suppressed at will by THE WHITE MAN while the TWO BIG BROTHERS of the world stood by and watched !

I've lived through it - Thank You !!

Apartheid was a policy of discrimination based on the colour of one's skin. In 1948 the Afrikaners (White South Africans of Dutch descent) won the general election, (only Whites were allowed to vote, and actually, they 'stole' it) and separation based on one's race was enforced in a very violent and cruel way. For example, whites could enter any government building through the main entrance, but Blacks, Coloureds, (mixed races) and Indians had to go to a little window 'round the back'. Blacks were intentionally given an inferior education, 'to keep them in their place'. But, if a an 'important black' from another country came to South Africa, he or she was made an 'honourary white'. (How idiotic!) By far the most stupid and illogical 'law' was the curfew system. Although blacks were allowed to work in 'White' cities and towns, at nine every night a siren went off, which meant that ALL blacks had to be out of the 'white' areas. Very often Afrikaner men and boys roamed the streets at night looking for Blacks in their towns and cities, and God help any Black they encountered. These blacks were severely beaten up, and sometimes killed. We had two groups of Whites in South Africa: Afrikaans-speaking and English-speaking. The English-speaking Whites were in the minority and generally more liberal than the Afrikaans-speaking lot, and were often discriminated against as well. (I am a South African of British descent, and I was thrown into prison 3 times for protesting against the 'system') What I witnessed in these prisons I prefer to forget, sufficeth to say that I suffered from terrible nightmares for about 10 years after.
But, and let this be a lesson to the world, the good overcame the bad, and although there is now a bit of 'racism in reverse', (Affirmative Action) things are very much better now than, say, twenty years ago.
In the early 90's sanity prevailed, and the system was slowly changed, Mandela was released from prison after 27 years, and elections were held where everybody could vote. That was probably the most emotional day of my life; little old black women casting their votes for the first time in their lives, with tears running down their cheeks.
South Africa has a very high level of violence at the moment, and this is due to the 'lost generation', the generation of youngsters whose motto was 'Liberation before Education'. (they burnt their schools in protest) Today these 'youngsters' are middle-aged men with no skills, except the talent of handling weapons.
Let this be a lesson to the world!
'Education before anything else!'

The word apartheid means "seperateness" in Afrikaans, which is similar to Dutch (my knowledge isn't too great on this). The whites in SA were mainly of Dutch descent, hence the funny(!) accent that is half native south African and half Dutch.

No, it was (is) just a bit less brutal than the holocaust. Aparteid is where one group of people, usually black, are not allowed the same rights and freedoms as others, usually whites. It resulted in black only townships, white only beaches, shops, restraunts, buses etc. I have heard it's still practiced in some places, ironically Israel, where Palestinians are treated like an underclass and kept separate. It's usually referred to as aparteid when it is goverment policy to segregate races/religions/cultures. When it's informal it's just plain old racism.

PS the extermination of a race is genocide not aparteid

Apartheid is the discrimination of a lesser race and on a worst concept, the elimination of that race if possible.
