I say let them think they are the best, for the rest of us in the world know this is not the case :)
As for the Americans who wear Canadian flags, they are contradicting everything they stand for - obviously America isn't the best country in the world if they have to hide behind the Canadian flag.

Funny enough, people in the country where I live used to bash the American educational system but when it came to the Pisa1 study they ended up way behind America. They used to bash American racism, but since 1991 they had at the very least 130 capital (murder) hate crimes (with only 30% inhabitants compared to the U.S.). When I come to these sites I'm impressed by the amount of literature highschool students have to read - they know books European pupils have never heard of (not in English, any European or other world language) - I know they're often bored or fed up - but at least the educational system tries to make them read those books. There's a lot wrong with the U.S. and its educational system but as far as I know it's the same with any other country's system.
Why do they wear Canadian flags? Why shouldn't they - whith all this stupid anti-Americanism in many Asian and European countries???? I'm ready to to wear any flag as long as I know I won't fall prey to stupid prejudices. The only question for me is: why wear any flag? But that said, nobody would ever thik I'm American - my English is too worse.....

I don't know what the flag thing is all about, but I don't understand what is wrong with having a love for your country. I could ask the same thing about any sport fan. I could say it about any band, any business, resturaunt, school, or any other organization. It isn't that these people think they are better that anyone else they just have pride in what they are. You want to talk about this question look at your own. You aren't from america and you are asking why we think we are the best. YOU must think you are the best to raise this question!

We don't. We aren't the only, or even largest, "free country"; I think that would be India.
Our education system is NOT better, at least not in math and science.
hpotter has it right. By the way, Harry Potter is just another example of a great thing that isn't American.
I'm glad I live in the US, but I'm sure there are many other countries that are fine places to live. The US just happens to be my favorite.

I have to say that we have better educational opportunities, freedom to do anything we want as long as it is not illegal, both of our political parties do not resort to violence when disagreeing on stuff and people are happy, but not necessarily better.
Only thing is that there are some who are not motivated enough to support their families, get an education and work an honest living.
When Americans travel, I don't blame them for wearing neutral country flags. After starting wars, who's to blame for hating us?

I am not American but
I think this is a very generalised statement.
Majority of Americans don't have an elitist attitude.
I do think that Americans are taught from early on that they
should be proud of themselves and their country.
nothing wrong with that.
I think that pride is often misconstrued as elitism by others.
Majority of Americans are well aware of other "free" countries
and can see flaws in their own education system.
What we need to understand is that the peanut running the place
doesn't reflect the majority of good people that come from USA.

Arrogance - why we think we are better. Ignorance and denial - why we think we're the only free country, especially while we're losing many of our freedoms. Educational system - I don't believe many Americans think they have a better one. US always performs poorly in international comparisons, and this is reported in US media.
You're right about the Canadian ruse! Americans have thin skin, and can't face the prejudice.

You make this generalization because..? You don't think YOUR country is the best? ("They" implies you are not American.)
As an aside, I think our educational system, based on an old German system, is good for making drones. But then conformity is what was in mind when it was put in place. Hmmm, with that in mind, I suppose it is rather successful, isn't it. ; )
