Forget Decon. Yes, it will kill them but they seem to always die inside the walls and the smell is really bad for weeks until they dry up. Use rat traps along the wall as others suggested. However, rats are very intelligent. A way to fool them is to bait the traps without setting them for a day or two until you see the bait disappearing. Then set them. Repeat every few days until they are gone.

Here's what worked for me. Take a rat trap and put it in a paper sack. Use a glob of peanut butter for the bait. When the rat gets caught in the trap, pick up the bag and throw the entire thing in the trash. This works well if you just have a small rat problem.
Downsides to glue traps: sometimes the rats will get stuck in them and thrash around and really make a racket. You want to kill them but not watch them freak out.
Double downside to using poisons/pellets: the poison will kill the rats, but you don't know where they are going to crawl off to to die. They may go into some crack and leave their rotting body to stink up your house while it decomposes. Or you may find his little carcass being picked clean by ants.
In my experience, the traps in the bag works well. If it's really overwhelming, call in the professionals!
Good luck!

I had this same problem. Tried to do the live trap thing...doesn't work. Gotta kill 'em. So get a rat trap and use a geranium leaf for bait. No kidding !! I've gotten several that way. So you know...where there's one there are several...so keep the trap activated for awhile...and good luck

Stick Pads catch it but it will still be alive. Whatever you do dont put out ANY rat poision, it will crawl somewhere and die, and you will be stuck with a horrible smell in your house. You could set up a trap, like for squirel or coon. Then take it far far away and let it go.
