I want to build a 5000 gallon pond using cement, but I am kind of having trouble finding resources on how to do this.

I would like to know how to install an externail pump, and how do I do the drain???

How do I put the plumbing in? Would this be buildt pretty similar to a pool?

What has to be done to the cement to make it safe for fish?

Would making it out of cement be cheaper than liner?

There are no rocks in FL, so we are going to have a company come out and "make" the rocks for us. They do a FABULOUS job sculpting rocks from rebar and cement. I would have to have a cement pool in order to have them do this, though. So that is why it needs to be out of cement.

If you can find ANY resources for me on how to do any of this, Id be eternally greatful! Im so excited to get my pond going!!!!

Good luck with your "cement pond".

I'm not sure that cement is a good choice for use with fish, though. Unless you line it with a heavy rubber liner. Read someplace that cement needs to "cure" for MONTHS before fish can be introduced because the chemicals in cement (concrete) can hurt them. Fish can be quite an investment and you don't want to put that money into them and have them die.

Just found a website you might want to check:

www.pondpals.com

There are literally THOUSANDS of sites that deal with building water features: I've checked out at LEAST 999 of them for ideas for my own water feature!! It really can get overwhelming. There are also some very helpful magazines out there you can check too. And you can "google" the subject: fishponds for a BIG list of resources. Just a thought.

This company that is making rocks for you out of rebar and concrete sounds interesting but WHY does the inside of the pond have to be concrete? Big rocks and boulders do very well on top
of a flexible (cut from a roll, like fabric) RUBBER liner and really is the choice of professional landscapers I've heard. "Cheaper", in this case, may not be better.

I wish you well with your fish pond. When it is all done and the fishies are swimming happily, it would be great to see some pictures.

You can also check out the website for the DIY network, I think it is www.diy.com (?).

Have fun!

SMILE!

it doesn't sound like you've given this enough thought, if not done correctly the first time you can REALLY end up with a problem
please go to pet shop or garden shop or library and get books on garden ponds, they will tell you everything you need to know
it's too involved to go into on this forum

If you live in FL you should google a place called Pebble Junction. They have a nice selection of rocks in all sizes...all the way up to boulders.

Here's an idea. Dig a big, but not huge hole (or have it done.)
Then pour in enough cement to fill it. Next, once it's dry, fill it with a lot of water and some fish.
