Just buy the Kaplan book on GMAT and try out all the exams. Do all the exercises for about a month and then search the internet for Computer Aided Tests on the GMAT and take it there with the time pressure on. Assess if you have your target GMAT grade. If you need work on specific areas like vocabulary or geometry, then focus on studying up on those. When you get 750+ in the exercises over the internet, then go for the real thing! Good luck!

By the Princeton Review book for the GMAT and work through it, I did it for the GRE and it really helped.
