If a motor can not be kept at a constant temp, you will waste fuel, foul plugs, have other running issues. Depending on the motor you can cause serious damage to it.
What kind of motor are we talking about? Some older engines and smaller motors were designed not to have thermostats except in colder weather.

Sorry did not see it was you. No, your M/C cooling system relies on the thermostat for correct water flow. Put the 143 in it.

Depends on the engine. The purpose of the thermostat is to allow the engine to heat up to the recommend operating range. If a t-stat is removed on a two stroke outboard the engine will run cool and will foul plugs sooner but you should see no engine failure problems. On a four stroke outboard the engine will also run cool and can cause the engine to "make oil" (un-burnt fuel slips by the rings because of incomplete combustion mixing the oil with gas) which if left unattended could cause engine damage over time. The best thing to do is to just spend 14 bucks and get a new thermostat and gasket.

you do not say what boat or engine?,consider the t/stat as a door it stays shut till it reaches the temp it was made for, then it opens most modern motors have an ecm or ecu,you could burn a load more fuel because it will run cooler, not good, but on short turn basis go for it.

I am no expert, but if I may offer the thought that there may be a danger of over revving the engine.

I would also share a concern that the part may have something to do with circulating coolant water.

The average price of a marine thermostat is $40.00 125-165degrees , Get one. They'll tell you the correct temp for your location also.

You can run it maybe for 10 minutes. It will overheat, and damage the heads, pistons, rings, etc..

Mine kept getting clogged up with algae so I took it out. Ran fine for me. This was several years ago with a 75 hp outboard.
