I liked the movie a lot. I think the movie *did* serve a purpose. It showed two down-on-their-luck human beings, and what happens when one gives up, and the other doesn't.

Most eerie shot of the whole movie: when she's having sex with him that one last time. It looks like he's dead, the viewer thinks he's dead, but he's not. It looks like she's having sex with a corpse.

Good movie. Too bad Elizabeth Shue didn't parlay her momentum from that movie into bigger and better things.

the movie? it was like this wonderfully built edifice, perfect down to the last brick, but then someone decided to say "hmmmm... lets NOT put doors on it".
Well acted, well written and directed, but there was absolutely no reason. No purpose, no meaning. Staring a paint drying would have been more productive (not to mention less depressing).
