Since you're free to cross the road anywhere you like in England, I don't want to forget and end up in San Quentin.

San Quentin? Crosswalks are for pedestrian safety, no one is sent to prison or jail for 'jaywalking'.

You can get a ticket for Jay walking, but it has never happened to me and I would guess unless you are in a big city obstructing traffic and a cop was there with nothing better to do that you can get a ticket.

And you won't go to jail for that.

And I have walked on sidewalks in England. I think being in the street on some of them maybe safer.

No, but depending on where you are, you might get a ticket.
But then again, there is probably a tiny town somewhere in the middle of nowhere in the USA that would have a law like that. (With my luck I'm suprised I haven't found it yet) I doubt it, though, but there are some stange ones out there.

Feck off. That, my friend, is a load of bullshit. Crossing the street laws have never been made, as far as I can see.
