Is there a USB cord that we need? Can we hook the laptop ut to the desktop to get internet?

The cleanest and most streamlined way is to buy a broadband home router, have the cable/ADSL modem and two machines hooking to it according to its manual and run the entire thing that way.

I can make it more complicated by saying to turn the desktop into a gateway machine for laptop. But the above is much more preferrable.

You need to get a router. Go to Walmart or Best Buy and get a woreless router for the computer with internet, and a wireless adapter for the one without (the laptop). That should do it. Just ask a knowledgeable person at a computer store like Best BUy (yeah, I know alot of people don't like Best Buy, but still....)

If both your coputers have Wifi cards, or a wireless modem, you can connect them in a network. To do this, go to My computer> My Network places> set up a new network location. Then you will need to find the IP addresses of the computer that you're attempting to connect to, which I don't know how to do on XP.

you can if both systems have a network interface card installed. If they have you just need a cross link cable then run the network wizard to configure your connection.

don't think usb. think tcp/ip. either with ip sharing or a router to the net.

or a simple cat 5 cross over cable to your machine....

Ethernet(tcp/ip) , not USB
