I have 2 refurbished laptops - no problem. Sometimes there'll even be a warranty.
Keep in mind that you want to stay away from 'lower end' or "economy' chips like the Celeron.
Centrino is a nice laptop chip and is associated with Intel Pentium. I have used Pentiums for 10 years. There are faster chips - but think cars when you think chips. There's a clunker, there's a car that will get you where you need to go and there's the fast, sporty car.
Your chip is basically your brain and it's associated with your motherboard which is like a roadmap for information. Your chip, motherboard and memory (ram) are the three most important parts of your computer (and if you have a laptop, your monitor - digtal vs. analog is also really important because you can't just go out and buy a new one). Just some things to think about.
There are 'fast' chips but many of them burn very 'hot'. I just see pentiums as more of a nicer car without being the sporty racer. It performs very well, doesn't give me problems, and a comfortable ride.
If you're a 'gamer', you may opt for a faster chip - (gamers, you know what they are). If you're not going to compete with games, you'd be better off to stay with a medium chip. I would type these chips into 'search' in the internet and see what type of chip they are. Stay away from the economy chips - as they have a shorter life span.

If you get a refurb make sure it is from a trusted source like HP or Dell. Like was said before dont buy from e bay refurb.
Centrino, Sempron, Turino and Athalon are all chip names. Each one is different for example, Centrino is made by Intel and support internal wireless technology. Athonlon is made by AMD. Good luck.

The differences maybe the features that each laptop offers, but I see alot of Centrinos'. Refurbished ones are just as good, but with limited warranty!

I have had no problems with the last two I have purchased. I gought mine off ubid dot com about 1 and 2 years ago.
As for the question on the processors, differing manufacturers get better/worst performance so a little researh helps when selecting a specific make and model. I use http://cnet.com as it gives pretty decent consumer reviews for all kinds of tech toys. Good luck.

often it signifies that they are 2d hand. Refurbished skill that a fix has taken position, so therefore, the laptops were likely defected in some style, repaired and now being resold. this isn't unavoidably a nasty aspect. each from time to time the alternative factors are more moderen and more desirable helpful high quality compared to the preexisting factors.

refurbs suck. anything refurb'd is a crap shoot. personally I's never buy one even though the price may be lower than brand new. some are returned for simple reasons others are returned for major reasons. might get one that works fine, migh get one that works okay. I'd stay away from them

If your knowledge of computers is good then it makes a fun project. They are cheaper and they can be used to their capacity instead of a new computer that may never be used to its potential.
Tigerdirect is a good reseller of Refurbs aswell.
