Of course affirmative action is wrong. One should not water down the standards of any institution, whether educational or professional, just to allow a certain number of one disenfranchised group in over another. Acceptance, ideally, should be based on merit solely.

People want affirmative action because, supposedly, it ensures that inequalities doesn’t exist in hiring practices in the work place and in acceptance standards in institutions of learning. The exact opposite is true. Affirmative action actually does discriminate heavily against those who are qualified, for the sake of those who beg for pity. All it ensures is ethnically diverse mediocrity and incompetence.

Keep in mind that I am as brown as they come. So this is not coming from a disgruntled white man.

Yes and no, there is no clear answer on how to level the playing field for all people. Affirmative action in itself is raciest and I feel the best qualified should get the job, a job should not be given because a person is of a race. However with the prejudice that still is prevalent today I feel there is a need to do something to level the playing field.

Of course it is! Affirmative action is merely government-protected segregation. We must be a race-blind society! Race and ethnicity are completely irrelevant causes to deny someone a job or acceptance to college.. it needs to be stopped. NOW.

"Affirmative action" has served a good purpose but has now become over-blown, much the same as happened with unions in America. Like the UAW and similar unions, it is now dragging America down, and minorities along with it.

Well, considering that affirmative action only applies to the federal government and companies/organizations that receive federal funding, I don't really see a problem with it. It does not apply to privately- and publicly-owned companies. There's nothing that says a company like Wal-mart needs to hire N amount of minorities. It's public perception that forces them to hire women and minorities. No company with a large quantity of employees wants to be the one that has nothing but white employees.

It's only wrong the longer it goes on. At this point, one might think that we've finally reached a point where letting people into jobs/college/whatever can be based without any sort of judgement on race, creed, or ethnicity. It's still going on though.

Of course it is, it gives an advantage based on race to even the playing field, but in the process it is itself a racist concept because people shouldnt be judged at all by race on any official capacity when it comes to school, jobs, etc.

Yes.

The government should not be passing laws based on race. Equal protection means equal protection, not nudging the scales in one direction or another.
