Hey Nicolle, Don't listen to 'em
I have in my driveway a 98 Escort with 156,000 miles on it. I must say I am a bit shocked....
\Proper maintenance kiddo.
oil changes 3000-4000 miles brake at 40K intervals tire pressures and new coolant every 3rd year. Usually rentals get oil changed but thats about it. I would look into replacing the timing belt soon as I am sure it hasn't been. This is just good sense mechanics.

How funny. I too had a '03 Ford Focus and it was a rental too. I didn't buy it by choice really. I had an accident with my own car and had to rent the Focus while mine was in the shop for body work. I had intentions of fixing my own car up and then using it for either a trade in or selling it out right. I drove the Focus for quit a few weeks. It was a good running car and by the time my own car was out of the shop I new without a doubt the Focus would be good to me until I could use it for a trade in for what I really wanted. Well I hung on to that car for 2 years before trading it in. It never gave me any problems what so ever. My Son who is a rental car inspector and a very close friend who is a master mechanic told me these little Focus cars are classified as "Throw Aways". In other words they are only good for a few years then they will start nickel and dimeing you to death. You would be better to trade it in now. Before you put many more miles on it. The Dealership I traded my car at told me 3 years is usually the limit for those cars. I got a good trade in price on it too of $8,000.00! Now I didn't have as many miles on mine as you do. So that probably helped with a good trade in price. Any way I hope this will be good advice for you. If you like your Focus and you're happy with it, then trade it in on a newer one. I'm afraid that's the only way your going to make it last.

Unfortuneately Sherry can be right with the throw away if the car isn't kept up as they have a habit of developing squeaks and rattles over time.. put up with them and do regular maintainace..no problems.. seen them at 120k already...

but depending upon when you bought it could also help.. as I find rental cars are some times dogged espcially the focus style cars.. if you bought late in life (like 80k) go have a mechanic look it over and inspect for future problems...

but pretty much other than the squeak and vibration complaints, they hold up and rock...

My experience with ford's is that they start to fall apart about 100,000 miles. Good luck.

just follow the manufactures suggestions. take it to a shop you trust. if it has been taken care of before you got it. the car will last a long time.

Just follow the factory recommended maintenance which should be listed in either your owners manual or your maintenance manual.
