I have a 52x24x52 CD-RW. I don't know what brand and I can't find any software for it. Device manager lists it as "CDwriter ide5224" and has a "!" against a yellow circle for it. It says "Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" . However, windows is worthless in fixing that. Updating the driver via winxp does not work. Uninstalling and then reinstalling does not work. The driver is provided by Microsoft, date 7/1/2001, driver version 5.1.2535.0.

Two things:

I pulled out the cd-rw and it was a "MagicSpin" model # BCE 5224IM. And I tried connecting it to a different IDE port but had the same problem.

Try connecting it to a different port if possible and try it on another computer too. Sounds like the port could have gone bad.

I had a similar problem awhile back with my CD-RW drive.I ended up having to replace the hardware. Its a simple procedure and not that expensive. You might try reformatting windows but I doubt this would work.

There has got to be something on the case of the drive that tells you who manufactured it. Still, of all the DVD and CD ROM's I've installed, I've never had to install any drivers. Could be a defective unit.

The only thing I can say is to consult M$ and tell them you have a bad driver or replace your CD-RW DRIVE with compatable eguipment.
