Always give year, make, engine size and model # when asking questions.
When the push rod is pushed into the engine, the clutch disengages (the clutch plates are spread apart and it feels like you're in neutral).
If your bike is a 1980 Yamaha xs650g - the push rod that comes out the left side of the engine, the push rod is 2 pieces & there are 2 ball bearings to increase the length of the push rod. One at the clutch and the other between the 2 push rods. When the engine is dissasembled or the clutch is serviced, sometimes people loose or forget the balls.
Did you try adjusting the clutch? Where the cable attaches to the motor, there is an adjusting screw in the middle of the push lever. Loosen the lock nut. Tighten the screw until it just touches. Then back it out 1/4 turn and tighten the lock nut.
