i think they should get to choose for themselves but they shouldnt want to abandon the place they grew up in they should have some respect for that but it depends on wether they think its where they were born or where their parents were born everyone has a different view on this

Both Englishness and Scottishness could be enough to be proud of, yet if your friends grew yup in Scotland and insist upon being English I fear they might not respect where they are from. It is their own choice though, and they are entitled to it. I think you should respect that, and tehrefore call them English.

Can I just say though that as a Dutchman having lived in Scotland long enough to have obtained a British passport I envy them for having such a choice? Whereas I can't be but a Dutchman living in Scotland, never a Scot nor Englishman in fairness, they could be either. It'd be good if your friends would respect their roots and their current environment, so that if they wish to identify with a certain nationality they respect it.

They are English by choice and parentage, Scottish by birth but seen by the rest of the world on their passport as British.
So in a way everybody is a little bit right. But hey wouldn't it be really great if we expanded the picture and said it doesn't matter where anybody comes from, what their colour is, what religion they are or what accent they speak with lets all just get on. Too many wars have been fought over silly squabbles about who we are and where we come from, we are all children of the planet Earth let's look after it and each other!

Your friend should know best who they are. Being born somewhere does not mean being one with that land and or culture. Most people define themselves more by their cultural heritage then their actual place of birth.

In the case of your friends, call them British that is hardly a miss between the two.
