Rutherford's gold foil experiment showed that the main portion of the mass of an atom was concentrated in a very small, very dense core, surrounded at a (comparably) great distance by electrons....meaning the atom was mostly empty space.

This observation lead to the Rutherford atomic model in which most of the atom's mass was located in the positively charged nucleus which the negatively charged electrons orbited.

This theory is also sometimes referred to as the "planetary model" of the atom since the electrons were thought to orbit the nucleus much like the planets orbit the sun.

Bohr model depicts the atom as a small, positively charged nucleus surrounded by waves of electrons in orbit, but with electrostatic forces providing attraction, rather than gravity, and with waves spread over entire orbit instead of localized planets.
