Don't know about a season, but he has previous.
I am disappointed that Stuart Pearce did not condemn this
vehemently. He hid behind a bland statement....No Class.
As for Thatcher, I think the Police should sort this out, as
player seem to think that they are above common laws
because they are on a football park

This is a difficult question. It was an absolute shocker but if you think of things that some people have got away with in the past then it's gonna be hard to give him the ban he deserves.
A president has to be set and unfortunately players try this sort of thing all the time and Thatcher just happened to do it better than other players. (Just think back to William gallas last season when he tried to blatantly break that blokes leg against fulham, he only got a 3 game ban.)
the punishment guidelines have to be re-written to take into consideration the intent of the incident rather than just putting things into bands and punishing the players like that.

Ah...this is one of those interesting things in football that happen now and then - but am always perplexed at how the press treats it. Indeed, Thatcher was not only thuggish, but dangerous. But tell me...if England was playing, say, Argentina or any other of the Latino teams with 'form' (id est; wound up either fans or governments of home country over the years), and young Rooney nearly snapped the head of one of the opposition, I suspect the press would be treating the teams' homecoming like 1945 - or the second half of 1982 after the - er - 'conflict' in the Falklands. Wayne would be Churchill...or the other Thatcher as the popular red-top press will polish his wee ego no end. And have young kids in parks thinking it's okay to mix football with wrestling in periods of 'England expects...' on account of what the popular print had reported in what they saw as the teams' 'finest hour'.

Ban him for a minimun 8 games and fine him the 8 wks wages, only on the understanding that if it happens again he gets banned from all football for 3 yrs. There is no place in football for players like him.The fa need to make a stand on tackles like this make a decision and stick to it for once, its the only way players like Thatcher will learn. An Pearcie should be fined for almost condoning it...

Its definitely an intentional foul to stop the opposing player from getting the ball...but it was not a fight, so a whole season is too much. I think a 4-5 match ban would be a fair sanction.

I was at a Rangers game, when Duncan Ferguson (allegedly) headbutted John McStay (Raith Rovers), he got 6 months in the jail for that. Ben Thatcher should be looking at a few years for what he did to Mendes.

I definitely think he should be banned for the whole season, or he should really not be allowed to play agian. I think he's a disgrace to football players and football fans.
