Once the baby is strong enough to roll onto their tummy (according to my doctor) they are fine to sleep on their tummies. However, I would continue to put him/her on his/her back and let them decide for themselves how they are most comfortable.

My 11-mo-old daughter has never slept on her back. I was paranoid about it and kept checking her every 8-10 minutes when I first brought her home. She only slept on her tummy and she was fine. I think the rule is once they roll onto their tummy, it's safer for them to sleep that way then for a newborn to do it.

Once a child can roll over, there is no way to control how they sleep. I know there are studies out there about SIDS and shy one should put their baby to bed on its back, but, It also has to be a personal choice. When my now 18 yr. old was a baby, I was told to put him to bed on his stomach! He lived and is just fine. I also have a 41 month old and 18 month old, both who slept much better on their bellies from little on. They like the extra pressur on their bellies and didn't wake from the startle effect every time there was a noise. They are both well. I felt comfortable doing it, and often check on them. Do what you think is right. Maybe in 10 years, experts will go back to belly instead of back.

I've read that once they can get there themselves then it's safe. My baby is 6 1/2 months old, and if she falls asleep on her tummy, I usally flip her over before I go to bed.

Both my kids were put to bed on their stomachs from day one. I didn't want them choking if they threw up. They are fine and grown up now. If they are old enough to roll over onto their tummy how are you going to stop them anyhow?

you should always put babies to sleep on their back, if they can lift their heads up all the way and hold it or they can roll over, still put baby to sleep on their back but if they roll over in their sleep its fine, if it makes you feel more comfortable put a pacifier in your baby's mouth, it has been known to reduce the risk of SIDS significantly, it will act as a barrier between your baby's mouth and nose and anything that would smother it.

Please, don't put your baby on its tummy. It will increase the risk for cradle death.
