Nobody really knows why some kids have night terrors, but most kids do outgrow them. You can talk to his pediatrician about it, or maybe take him to one of those places where they do sleep studies, but I doubt there is much they can do. My nephew has them, they've gotten pretty scary, one time he was yelling that he needed his knife and then he started rummaging through drawers, but as he's getting older (8 now) they are less frequent. Just do what you've been doing by keeping him safe, and whatever you do, don't embarrass him or make a big deal of them the next day, in fact don't even talk about them in front of him. If he's like most kids he has absolutely no memory of them after he wakes up, if he does have a memory of them then something besides night terrors could be going on, in that case a sleep study might be able to help.

My Little Cousin (3 yrs Old) had Night Terrors. Night terrors can't really be explained what causes them. I was very involved in my cousins life I was the nanny Kind of. We found if we didn't give her a cup of water before she went to sleep that she would not have them. We also found if you started talking to her about her day and ask her what she did what her favorite part of school was she would calm down. She wouldn't answer the questions she would just start to lay her head down and we would tell her close your eyes go to sleep. With night terrors it is like someone sleep walking they don't recognize you and don't understand what is going on. Just try not to wake him up while it is going on he will be very confused and disoriented. I f there is a habit that you do with him that you could change see if that will help. Good luck I know it is a very scary experience!!!

For give you a better answer, you forgot to tell how older is your son.But is okay.Could be these factors: what kind of TV programs, movies he watch, computer games, videos, etc. You need to talk with him,ask why he screams, ask very seriously what he see.On the other hand, you need professional help from doctors, they need to see and help your kid, before is too late,or before something happen. I believe he is okay, nothing is wrong with him. What happen is that something happen to him that you do not know about it. can be anything not really bad, but you need to investigate and get help.Good luck, and God Bless you and protect your son.God,Jesus and the Holy Spirit and celestial angels will protect your son of everything, I pray.Good luck.

How old is your child? I know my little brother use to do things like when he was asleep but he was losing his breath, I mean he was forgetting to breath, so someone had to always be near him when he slept, so we could keep an eye on him, this happened all the way into adulthood, we finally found out it was a medical condition, you need to get him to a doctor and just explain the situation, I will pray for you all and good luck.............

Make sure he doesn't get exposed to horror movies depending on how old he is remember children are more sensitive to material that he even think is ok. Maybe you should take him to the doctor it could be a symptom of something else.
