a prerequisite is a class that you must take in order to fulfill the degree that you are seeking.
in other words: as an education major in south Texas, it is required that I take a music course before I get accepted into the Education program (along with many other courses)...
an associates degree is something that you get when you finish your first two years in a community college/ university. this is where all those prereq's come in handy.

Prerequisites are the classes or experiences you need before you can take a specific class in college. Sometimes you can test your way past a prerequisite, or petition the professor. Upper division classes usually have prerequisites.

Prereqs are classes that you have to have taken (or be granted an equivalency of for similar course work) in order to take a certain class or enter a certain program.
An associate degree (AA, I presume) is earned in an opened ended program that you usually take at a community college in which you satisfy a number of courses that are required at universities in order to complete the program (meaning major). The AA is a stepping stone to getting a bachelors at a 4 year university.
