I'm just looking for a way to stay in shape for bball and have fun too...is it a good idea? sorry for all the questions but please don't give me any stupid answers...much appreciated! =)

For cost: Your school may have an activity fee, but you'd know that better then I. As for supplies, you will just need a pair of running shoes. The cost varies from $50 to $150. Go to a local running store and they will set you up with a pair that is good for you. A lot of local running stores will also give you a team discount. A pair of training shoes normally last about 500 miles, so they are good for awhile. You can also purchase a pair of spikes for racing. The price range on them are pretty large, anywhere from $25 and up. Personally, i never replaced spikes because they were old, but i did have to because my feet grew. If you are new to the sport, hold off on the spikes until you see how much you like racing.

As for the distance, it will vary day to day. Girls probably peak at about 5 miles a day. Somedays you will do shorter distances for a speed workout. Races will be between 2 and 3 miles, depending on what your state does. Talk to the coach to get a better idea of the workouts and races.

XC is a great way to get in shape for basketball. You won't have to worry about being tired in the 4th quarter. You should have a lot of fun too. If you have any doubts, talk to some people already on the team.

There is usually a once a year athletic fee to join any team. Ours here is $25 for as many teams throughout the year you want, plus any equipment you buy for yourself outside of the school. You get a team shirt/singlet which you must give back at the end of that sports season. For X country you can train a couple miles each workout depending on how many days your team works out, we do 2x a week. The competition races will depend on your age group and the distance increases with your age group/grade level. It will be hard at first if you have never done it before but it will get easier and you will not be the only first timer so you can train with them, good idea to do something before basketball, here our track team start conditioning in the fall no competitions just training, if your school does that maybe you can join that.

well, you dont really need to spend much money. you need to buy a pair of running shoes, and if you want to, you can get a pair of running spikes for the meets. as for the distance question... that all depends on the coach, our girls coach makes them run 3-8 miles during a practice, but never a far run 2 days in a row, itll always be a long run, then a nice easy run the next day. and meet are usually about 3 miles long. cross country is definitely worth it no matter what your trying to stay in shape for. hope this helps : )

At our school, the only expense is your running shoes, which should be under $100. Girls run about 3 miles. It isn't hard, and it would be a great way to build your endurance for other sports.

It depends on each individual school. However I think the only thing you need for cross country is your school shorts and a school t-shirt which you already have for P.E. Check with the coach/PE teacher for more info on cross country.
