You need to earn your bachelors degree first. If you plan on teaching in middle/high school in a particular subject (what your major will be), then you will go for a single subject credential once you graduate. For elementary school, you need to earn a multiple subjects credential.

1. Earn your bachelors degree - theoretically four years.
2. Get accepted to a credentialling program (graduate program). It takes 1-2 years to earn a teaching credential but it depends on the structure of the program. It tends to vary from college to college so you'll have to investigate that yourself.

So it will be a total of about 5-6 years if you're just starting college.

While you can earn your credential while you teach, it's not the best way to go. This tends to be allowed for teachers that are in short supply - special education teachers, math & science teachers, etc. You are also put on an auxillary pay scale that's well below the pay of a credentialled teacher. If you think a credentialled teacher is paid poorly... ouch.

Teaching is NOT an easy profession and starting with little to no experience/education (from credentialling program/student teaching) is very tough - you're setting yourself up for failure in my opinion. I forgot the exact numbers, but a very high percentage of teachers quit within the first five years. Many are just not prepared. I would suggest completing as much training and experience as you can before you get your first class. Take your time, do it right. Remember, it's the kids that benefit from having a well prepared teacher or suffer from having an underprepared one.

Okay... it normally takes 4 years. You must have a bachelors degree but you need to take education and English. You can not get a degree in English and then teach it without having education as well.

What the other girl said about Fla is true. If a state is in desperate need of teachers they will sometimes pay for you to get a masters in education while you teach the subject that you already have a degree in.

Do you have a degree?

Which state do you live in?

I am going to school to be a teacher. I am currently doing my credential program. In order to be a teacher you must complete the following:
1. BA
2. CBEST
3. CSET
4. RICA
5. Teacher Performance Assessments (3 of them)
6. Fieldwork hours
7. Student teaching
7. Course work

Maxma is so wrong. You'll need a B.A. or B.S. in your subject area with 12 credits in education. Four of those education credits must be in teaching methods.
Check with the state ed dept. for the other requirements like a seminar in child abuse or drug abuse. Usually takes four years. Usually you can teach at 22 years old if you are on time in school. BTW Orange county pays better than San Diego and LA.

Retire in 33 more years, and move to Florida.

I have one year to go to retirement. Thank God.

You guys forgot the CSET too. For you to teach English you will first need to get your B.A. in English, pass the CBEST, single subject CSET in English and then you enter a credential program for 1-2 years depending on the college and program you enter and then you get your credential

It varies from state to state what is needed. In general you have to have a BA or BS in education of in the field that you want to teach in with a minor in education all the the latter does not always hold true. Then you have to be approved by the State Board of Education it is the State Board that issues the credentials. To get the exact requirements for your state check with the State Board of Education in your state.

If you're talking about in the U.S., you need to have a bachelor's degree, which takes at least four years. If you already have a bachelor's, and wish to become certified to teach something related to that field, you will still need to take some education classes in order to get certified.

In California it takes five years of college, and passing the NTE (National Teachers Exam) to be certified/licensed to teach. It is important that the school be nationally accredited. I recommend that you speak with an academic advisor/career counselor in Student Services at your school. Their paid to help you by the college, and they can give you more information, and assist you with required courses to keep you on schedule.

i think of it relies upon plenty on what state you're dwelling in. i'm a school librarian in NYS. i did no longer have an undergrad coaching degree. while i develop into getting my MLS (grasp of Library technology), i mandatory merely 12 extra coaching credit to be waiting to get approved by NYS as a instructor (which a school librarian desires to be)--alongside with taking required workshops, doing pupil coaching and passing state assessments. they have now raised that to 30 coaching ranges for human beings without an ed. degree. i assume for employer it may be the comparable form of ingredient in ny. you ought to rather artwork in a school district as a instructor aide (some require certification, some do no longer) while you have been going to college for the coaching degree, yet that should merely be like having the different job whilst going to college.
