It is about a Southern Belle who was jilted by a "man of low degree" and could never recover from the emotional shock. She continued to wait for him for the rest of her life.

It's an innane song about a girl look for her father.
The Lyrics start "Hey Delta Dawn what's that flower you have on, could it be a rose from days grown by?
Made popular by an Oklahoman once married to Glen Cambell.
The song is innane but sticks in your head; came out in the '70s.

I'm not sure, but preachers do tend to get around to mentioning "mansions in the sky." So, "Spanky69" may be right... Moreover, back when the song was popular on the radio up in Buffalo, NY in the early 70's, some DJ used to play Janis Joplin's "Oh Lord, won'tchya buy me a Mercedes Benz..." blended together at the same time and I never quite got the connection...

About a 41 year old lady walking around with a rose pinned to her and a suitcase in her hand. She's waiting for the dark-haired man who promised to marry her when she was a young, beautiful girl. Now she's gone crazy because he stood her up but she's still waiting.

It is about an old unmarried woman who lives in a dream world
inhabited by her imaginary lover.
He may have also been someone she loved who died young therefore she waits for him to come take her to "his mansion in the sky."
