When playing some games it a way to rank palyers. Winning games move up a rung ( step) and losing games move down a rung ( step )

Going up and down the ladder - it's a way of saying how you are doing at something. (Like, if you're going up the ladder at work, you're doing well and getting promoted)

the steps on the ladder are called rungs. you know,or maybe you don't, like in that song jacob's ladder by huey lewis and the news. it goes "step by step, rung by rung".
