You're entering into a binding contract with the seller when you bid, so yeah, you have to pay. When you don't, the seller leaves negative feedback and your rating, which is kind of like a credit report, drops. Sellers can block you from bidding on their items, and you would have a hard time selling things. There is no automatic billing, you choose a method of payment, such as paypal.

You don't HAVE to pay.. but you SHOULD unless you are trying to pick a fight. It is a legal binding agreement, and the buyer could possibly track you down and sue you to recover the fees and the money for the item. Some kid actually got killed because he was pissing off the seller of an item he bought.

When the bid reaches really high, most likely the bidders are fake and won't pay. They usually do this because 1) they are selling the same thing and wan't theirs to get the bids 2) they don't think the item should be listed on eBay or 3) they lost their marbles.

Yes, you have to pay. It is a legal and binding contract when you bid. You can be taken to court if you do not pay.

its like going into a store and picking out a nice thingy that you want and then walking out without stopping to pay. however in this case, the seller will not mail your your thingy, they will report you the gods of ebay.

If you don't want to pay, you need to contact as soon as possible the seller and explain that you made a mistake.
usually they will just report you for dead beat, but communicate with them is the best you can do...
Good luck.
