I recieved a ticket in 1987 for driving on suspended license posted bail and never returned to court. What is the statue of limitation in Illinois to prosecute

First of all, the statute of limitations only applies when you have not had legal proceedings begun. Obviously, you have. You paid the bail and didn't appear so therefore the bond was forfeited. Most likely a bench warrant was also issued.
No only will you be prosecuted for DWLS but you can also be charged with Failure to Appear, and/or Contempt of Court. Suggestion.... call the court and see if there is a warrant and what the bond (if any) would be. Then arrange for a bail bond if there is one and take it with you to the court. Turn yourself in at the court. Worst case, you will be arrested and then bonded out right after booking you in. Best case, the court lost the file, the judge is in a good mood, and you he just tells you to go home. Good luck.

Traffic tickets are for generating revenue. There's no more of a statute of limitations for that than there is for income tax. You won't get a reprieve from the government. If someone owed you money, would you forgive them after 2 or 3 years, or would you say they still owed you?

You never returned to court? So there's probably a bench warrant out on you for Failure to Appear. Sucks to be you. :)
You may want to contact a lawyer to find out if there is, in fact, a bench warrant out for your arrest. If so, then have said lawyer find out how to remedy it. Just so you know, there is no Statute of Limitations for a bench warrant.
