The Maya civilization is a historical Mesoamerican civilization, noted for the only known fully developed written language of the pre-Columbian Americas, its spectacular art and monumental architecture, and sophisticated mathematical and astronomical systems. Many of these accomplishments are particularly noted from the Maya florescence during what in Mesoamerican chronology is termed the Classic period (ca. 250 to 900), however these developments are also a feature of the preceding Preclassic (or Formative) period, and were continued on into the succeeding Postclassic. At its zenith it was one of the most densely populated and culturally dynamic societies in the world. The area of the Maya civilization extended throughout the northern Central American region which includes the present-day nations of Guatemala, Belize, western Honduras and El Salvador, as well as the southern Mexican states of Chiapas, Tabasco, and the Yucatán Peninsula states of Quintana Roo, Campeche and Yucatán.
The Maya civilization shares many features with other Mesoamerican civilizations, because there was a high degree of interaction and cultural diffusion throughout the region. Advances such as writing and the calendar did not originate with the Maya, however their civilization fully developed these. Maya influence can be detected as far afield as central Mexico, more than 1000 km from the Maya homeland. Many outside influences are to be found in Mayan art and architecture, thought to be mainly a result of trade and cultural exchange, rather than direct external conquest.
The Maya peoples never disappeared, neither at the time of the Classic period decline or with the arrival of the Spanish conquistadores and the subsequent Spanish colonization of the Americas. The Maya remain in contemporary Mesoamerican societies, and maintain a distinctive set of traditions and beliefs, combined with more recent practices such as the almost total adoption of Roman Catholicism. The Maya and their descendants form sizeable populations throughout the region formerly occupied by the states of the ancient civilization. Many different Mayan languages continue to be spoken as the primary language

People are saying the the maya "were" but the maya still exist and so does their language. I worked with a mayan guy at my old job. Mayans are short and fat, this guy was from some place in mexico called meridia in the yucatan. He told me I should go down there for a vacation but I dougt i will go, cause I like going to Asia countries cause of the hot asian chicks. This mayan guy also spoke spanish, so I guess alot of modern mayans may be biligual or trilingual as my coworker also spoke english. The mayans built pyramids along time ago.

The Mayans lived in Mexico, Guatemala, and other central american countries about 800 to 1000 years ago. They were pyramid builders and advanced farmers (they grew a lot of corn using techniques learned from the Aztecs) They lived in "cities" with relatively large populations. They invented a game played with a ball and a sort of hoop and built stadiums to play it in. They carved elaborate pictures in stone. It is thought that they performed human sacrifices. There are still Mayans living today, but they are assimilated into latin society. Just google Mayan Civilization or something like that and you'll find a lot of information on them. Good luck with your project.

The Mayans lived in Guatemala and Honduras, but their civilization vanished before the Europeans arrived. They built pyramids and elaborate temples. The most elaborate one I know is Copan. See what you can find out about it.

They were an indegenous tribe from the Yucatan coast. Their calenders and carvings demonstrated contact with outside worlds. They "disappeared"...but are said to return from a trip this upcoming 2012...when the planets align.

There is this girl named Maya that goes to Campo, she's on the cheerleading squad. She can do the splits in the air. That's about it, I would guess.
