Go to Folder Options on a regular explorer window, View, uncheck the "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" option. Click OK. Now go to the Properties of any file/folder you want / Sharing tab / select Share this folder / Permissions / remove Everyone from the list and click Add / Advanced / Find Now / select your username / OK / OK / allow Full Control to you.

OR, to push things a bit, Add user xxxxxx too, and Deny / Full Control to him.

*Note: Your partition(s) should be NTFS. It doesn't work on FAT whatever you do.

First create a shortcut to the folder somewhere discrete, then highlight the folder and right click, from the options in the expanded menu select and click properties, in the window that pops up click the advanced tab. Put a check mark in the "encrypt contents to secure data" box and remove the check from "allow indexing service" box. Click OK, then in the properties window check the "hidden" attribute box and click OK. You should also make sure that the file is not in the shared documents folder.
Now you will only be able to access the file or folder from the shortcut you created in the first step so don't forget where you hid the shortcut and what you named it!

Read through the following, print the screen or write notes before you attempt to change folder properties.

*Right click on the folder you want to secure and select Properties,
*click the Security tab,
*click the Advanced button at bottom of window,
*under the list of Groups and Users that can access the folder you will see 2 check boxes, the first one starts with "Inherit from parent...." take the tick out of this box,
*a window will pop up with a message and 3 buttons (copy, Remove, Cancel) click the Remove button,
*You will see ALL Groups and Users have been removed.
*Click the Add button,
*In the next window, type YOUR user-name then click Check Names, then click OK,
*On the next window tick the Full control box under Allow, then click OK,
*you should now be back to the Advanced window, click OK again
*which takes you back to the Security tab on the Properties window, click OK once more.

Now ONLY you have access to that folder, although others can see the Folder Name in a list, they cannot access it or delete it.

Hope that helps

Click on my computer and locate your documents folder. Right click on the folder and select properties. Click on the sharing tab and in the local sharing and security section put a check in the box that says "Make this folder private"

Remove them from Administrator Privileges under Control Panel > User Accounts. Then give your self a pass word.

You could remove the Administrator priveledges of the user. Go to Control Panel/Users.

There is a trade-off however, as the affected user can no longer install or update certain programs.

add a password to your admin account then make your folders private. xp should prompt you asking if you want to make your folders private. otherwise select the folders in question and then right click and select security. from there you can select who has access.

lock down the folder!
right click folder, properties, security, remove unwanted access and restrict access as needed to only those you want and to the level that you want.
