Well, what do your kids keep begging you for while out shopping? Do you have any perspective on the popular kinds of candies consumed by the kids when they can choose their own?
If you've got the cash to spread around, I submit the following for your consideration:
1. buy three units of cheap candies, the no-name stuff.
2. buy two units of mixed-bag name-brand stuff.
3. buy one unit of some strange, exotic candy from a store that gets stock from some distant country.
4. buy one large roll of plastic wrap.
5. put three individual cheap candies, two individual name-brand candies, and one individual exotic candy into a bundle and tie it up.
6. Distribute these bundles, rather than individual candies.
"Units" above refers to proportions, of course; the idea is to get something new and interesting without going too crazy.
Your best bet for the 'exotic' candy is to go someplace like "CostPlus" or the nearest Chinatown, and if you use dark-colored plastic wrap, you add to the mystery: "it's more than one candy, but I don't know what it is!"
I might also suggest some sort of front-lawn display that you participate in or that draws lots of attention from other trick-or-treaters, so that you keep the TP-ing to a minimum...
Good luck!

I usually get those caramel apple suckers, then a mixed bag with gum, sweettarts, etc. in it. But for the kids I really like I always have candybars for. Kids always show up before I get my own ready so the ones that I do know and like have aleady come. Then I leave the other in a bowl on a porch but someone stole my favorie bowl last year!

My favorites were caramel apple lollipops.
My mom always had a big variety of sweets and let the kids pick out 2 or 3. The most popular were milky way, snickers, peanut butter cups, atomic fireballs, and anything sour.

Hmmmm. I usually give out Reese's cups and Blow-Pops and some variety of candy bars. One of my mom's cousins gives each kid a full-size candy bar and a can of soda. He's a good guy.
I say, a good mix of sweet-n-sour, chocolate, peanut, and no-peanut-at-all (for the allergic kids.) Packs of gum might be cool, too--all the sugar, but it leaves room in your gut for more candy! Wheeee!

depends on how much you want to spend. Go to Costco and buy two or three of the giant bags of multi-candy. You can give out a variety of good candy and it won't break the bank

in case you have leftover Halloween candy after Halloween then please donate it to someplace which could use it. i've got linked an editorial with recommendations on the place you may donate it. We deliver ours to the infantrymen serving in Iraq. We comprehend that they hand it out to Iraqi toddlers who then tell them approximately IEDs (improvised explosive instruments). in case you do no longer elect to deliver it there are homeless shelters and nursing properties right here which will take it.

The most sugary, fattening candy you can find. Their parents may egg or TP you but the kids will think you are very cool. Add a dollar to each of them and they will really like you.

I always get halloween bags and fill them with little chocolate bars, candy and little non edible treats...like Halloween pencils, little rubber spiders and rings, stickers, eyeballs etc...usual Halloween stuff......I used to get my kids to fill them assembly style...they had a blast too...you can usually get the bags at dollar stores or party stores..then either fold them over (if you get the paper ones) or tie a ribbon if you use cellophane ones....the kids always loved them because it was another surprise to open when they got home...

pennies. dirty dirty old pennies.
seriously though, best treat you can give out are those little "grab bags" of candy. put whole bunch of different stuff in there and you'll be the queen of the hood.
