The name meteorologist indicates someone who studies meteors.
Meteors are outer space rocks, which would fall under people who study rocks, like geologist.
I would venture to say that no Weather Man/Woman has ever seen a metor, yet alone study one.
I would think a more accurate term would be "Climetologist or Weatherologist.

I understand the generic meaning, but I still think it is miscataloged, smile.
Since they study the atomosphere, a more accurate/appropriate title would be "Atmospherologist", or spaceologist. Meteors are in/'part of space/atmosphere. But you can't study a meteor/rock in space other than the tradrectory or distance.
But I know the title is in stone I know it will not be changed. smile.

Both meteor and meteorologist come from a word meaning sky. Meteors and weather both come from the sky.
