Its the only constellation I can clearly identify.

I know there are others up there like the bear, the crab etc.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to look for other patterns in the stars of the night sky?

Sorry, it probably is the plough, but it looks more like a sauce pan.

Its like a big gigantic dot to dot isn't it. You could make up your own patterns anyway. I can see the black hole in Uranus. (sorry, I'll get my coat...)

there's orion, which is most clearly identified by the three main stars in his belt.

If Sirius, the dog star (the brightest star in the sky, and usually low to the horizon) is there, its up and to the right of it. Its a big constellation. If you're away from a city you'll see much much more of it.

I have never understood the point of those constellations, and they never look like their names.
I suppose they made sense thousands of years ago, but even then they probably didn't look like it. I think however that the crab is a nebula, but you need a decent telescope to see its shape, which is really like a crab.
The great bear is the one you are supposed to orient by. The pole star is in his "tail". Your saucepan is his bottom and tail, so the bright star at the end of the handle is the pole star.
This is another example of English and Americans not understanding each other. What the English call the plough, the Americans call the dipper. A saucepan would look like a dipper.

Look north then scan around towards the east for 'the saucepan'.

When you say saucepan i assume you mean the... um .... thing, i forget it's name. I think your right though, it looks like a saucepan. I've seen it once, i think, but never again. maybe i should purchase a telescope.
