Because we tend to repeat how we've heard the word used whether it is right or wrong and we're too lazy to check out the correct use of a word.

People use these words because of anger. White person doesn't like something a African-American does and complains he is racist. And it just keeps going on and on. When people are angry they do not stop and think about what they are saying they just lash out.

Hypocrite - is one that goes to church to love every one etc, - then because another church go-er parked too close to your car you call then a son of a ***** - thus hypocrite. Racist - is exactly that - people who hate Jews, muslims, blacks, Irish, Italian, German etch and blah blah blah
