If you are going to live in a country that speaks a different language, you must learn the language. I lived in a foreign country and had to learn the language. There is no way to survive, work or function well if you can't speak the language. If you want to become a citizen of a country, you need to speak the language of the country.

Yes, at least try. If we decided to move to another country, are they going to have everything translated to English for us ? I wouldn't expect it, because I am in their country and respect their language, customs, beliefs and etc. I feel that some, not all immigrants, feel that we are obligated to cater to them.. I get really mad when I am at the store and they expect everyone to stop and try to speak their language, this is still America and we speak English.

Well, communication is important to get around in the world today. Of course immigrants should learn English if they're gonna be living in America.Just the same,Americans should try and learn different languages. It's fun and exciting as well!

Yes, they should speak the language of the land they live in. Keep the old language at home to teach the kids at supper. If they don't want to speak the language then why did they move here?

No. If they can surround themselves with people who speak their language, then they can function fine and contribute to society. Their kids will learn English, so just consider it a 1 generation gap to integrate non-English speaking immigrants.
Plus if they learn English but speak it poorly, I'll have to strain myself to communicate with them. If they don't speak English at all, I can spare myself the agony and get someone to translate without embarrasing them.

Well of course. I would want to know the language of any country that I would chose to live in and not expect the Chineese (for example) to learn English to suit me.

Yes, my mom allready knew English when she came here though. She spoke Spanish and had a Caribbean accent because she is Nicaraguan but now she doesn't even have an accent.

If they're staying permanently, then yes. They don't have to stop speaking their language, but they should learn English. It's irritating when someone drags you accross the grocery store to translate for them. I don't mind every once in a while, but, please at least learn the essentials.

Either that, or everyone in America learns their language. Personally, I think that if we could do both that would be really great.

No - I don't care what anyone does as long as it's not harmful to others. Europe is multilingual and promotes that; why not promote it here (including perspectives from different groups)?
